Rovers outplayed in local derby

Report by Jon Green

The euphoria of Saturday's late win over Nailsea & Tickenham was soon lost as Rovers were soundly beaten by Street FC on Tuesday evening.

The early signs suggested this was going to be a tough evening for Rovers as the hosts hustled them into making mistakes from the off. Street had the ball in the net in the 5th minute but it was ruled offside. The move had opened up the visitors rather easily though and it was a warning for what was to come.

However, somewhat against the run of play, Rovers took the lead in the 6th minute as Saturday's man of the match, Dan McBeam, cut in from the left and curled a beauty of shot that beat the keeper. It rebounded off the far post though straight into Street's Scott Laird who couldn't avoid turning the ball into his own net.

For the next twenty minutes or so, Street started to turn up the heat and Dan Jackson was forced into making three good stops to keep Rovers ahead. Their pressing was still forcing Rovers into mistakes and they couldn't keep hold of the ball for any period of time whilst Street's accurate passing was causing all sort of issues at the back.

Rovers had a brief response and chances fell for both Will Hailston and Jack Dancey but the equaliser came in the 38th minute as Callum Laird surged forward through the Rovers backline and struck a sweet shot past Dan Jackson. The goal had been coming.

The second half continued where the first had left off. Street were playing the ball around nicely and at times looked like they had an extra man on the field. Their attacks utilised overlaps on the left and right which was stretching the Rovers backline. Rovers toiled but struggled to create anything clear cut. Kye Simpson and Dan Cottle joined the action for Will Hailston and Corey Rawlings in the 58th minute.

Despite the dominance of Street, the game oddly seemed to be heading towards a draw as neither team really tested the keepers. That was until the 67th minute when Josh Radford produced a great strike from the left. Rovers couldn't really respond although Dan McBeam managed to get a weak shot away that was easy for the keeper to take.

The icing on the cake for Street came in added time as Toby Stephens came back to haunt Rovers to make it 3-1. From a throw-in deep on the right, he cut in and made a great run into the box and placed the ball past Dan Jackson.

It was a frustrating night for Rovers who looked second best for large parts of the game. They will need to be more resilient for the visit of Bashley on Saturday 3rd August as we begin our FA Cup campaign. 3pm kick-off.
